How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Jun 30, 2023

Almost everyone has unwanted hair, and while there are many at-home methods that you can use to remove that unwanted hair, those methods only deliver temporary results. The hair always grows back. If you’ve always dreamed of living hair-free, we can help make all your dreams come true. At Bel Viso Medical Spa in East Greenwich, RI, we offer laser hair removal, a treatment that will eliminate all of your unwanted hair for good.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is so effective because it does what other methods cannot. It targets and destroys the hair follicle at the root and renders it incapable of growing hair. During the treatment, our technician will apply the treatment device to your planned treatment area. Once the light emitted by the device penetrates the follicle, it destroys it.

IPL Hair Removal

IPL devices emit light waves that are attracted to pigment. They bypass the skin’s surface and surrounding tissue, leaving them completely unharmed. The laser zones in on the hair follicle’s pigment to destroy it, and eventually, that hair falls out.

After the recommended number of treatments, you will experience permanent hair removal that will last indefinitely. At Bel Viso Medical Spa, we use Lumenis® IPL Hair Removal, a powerful and effective treatment that delivers some incredible results.

Frequently asked questions

  • What Body Areas Can It Treat?

Lumenis® IPL Hair Removal can remove unwanted hair by targeting and destroying hair follicles virtually anywhere on the body. Some common treatment areas include the legs, arms, bikini zone, back, and chest. You can treat more than one area at a time, but doing so may extend your total appointment time.

When we create your treatment plan and customize it to your aesthetic needs, we will include every area you want to treat. Then, we can provide you with a better estimate of how long your appointment will take.

  • How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The total number of treatments you will need to see results will vary based on the areas you want to treat. Typically, four to six sessions are needed for the best results. We will help you determine how many treatments you will need to permanently eliminate unwanted hair during an initial consultation. You can rest assured that you will see results as long as you undergo the recommended number of sessions.

  • Is It Painful?

One of the benefits of laser hair removal treatments is that they are virtually painless. The cool gel helps ensure comfort during the treatment as the laser’s heat energy passes beyond the skin’s surface into the hair follicle.

Our technician is skilled and trained in how to perform these treatments and will help you get results while maintaining your comfort throughout the entirety of the treatment. During an initial consultation, our technician will explain the treatment in detail so that you know exactly what to expect when you arrive at your first appointment.

  • What Happens During a Treatment?

Before your appointment, your technician will prepare your treatment area by shaving the hair and then applying a cool gel to the area. Then, she will apply the device to the area with unwanted hair. The device will emit pulses of light, which may cause a warming sensation. Once the treatment is over, your technician will remove the gel and hair from the area. You can expect any remaining hair to shed within one to two weeks after treatment.

  • Is There Any Downtime?

Once your appointment is over, you can resume your daily activities. However, you must avoid excess sun exposure to help protect your skin and avoid sun damage.

Laser Hair Removal vs. Everything Else

Once you undergo laser hair removal treatments and experience your amazing, hair-free results, every other at-home hair removal message will pale in comparison. When you undergo the recommended number of treatments, you can throw out your razor, cancel your waxing appointment, and live hair-free for good.

Shaving

Most people own a razor and use it to remove unwanted hair from different parts of their bodies. The problem with shaving is that it’s only a temporary solution for unwanted hair. Shaving simply cuts the hair so that it’s level with the skin’s surface and less visible. It does not address the hair follicle or the root, which is why within just a few days, the hair regrows, and you’re back to square one.

Another one of the issues with shaving is that it can often lead to ingrown hairs, razor burn, redness, and irritation. It can be even worse if you have sensitive skin. The good news is, laser hair removal can end all of the shaving drama for good. This treatment will permanently damage the hair follicle so that you never have to shave again.

Waxing

Unlike shaving, waxing is a hair removal process that, if you’re brave enough, you can do at home. However, most people visit waxing salons for all of their hair removal needs. Unlike shaving, waxing will remove the entire hair and its root. However, in order to undergo another treatment, you need to let the hair grow out, which can be an awkward and uncomfortable phase, especially if that hair is in a visible area.

The Downsides

Additionally, waxing is not the most comfortable experience, and there’s really no way to make it more comfortable, so you have to white knuckle your way through it for the sake of vanity. For some, waxing does remove all of their unwanted hair, but it can be painful, to say the least.

It can also cause redness, bumps, and irritation that lasts for several days after treatment. The benefit of laser hair removal is that it does not hurt, it does not cause side effects, and you won’t have to continually schedule appointments throughout the year to maintain hair-free skin.

Depilatory Creams

Depilatory creams made their debut in 1844 and seemed to peak in the ’90s with the popular product Nair. While they may seem old-fashioned, some people still use them. These creams are often loaded with chemicals whose effect is still unknown. Your skin is your largest organ and absorbs the products and ingredients that you apply.

The chemicals in these products could cause adverse reactions and negatively affect your skin and your health. Lumenis® IPL Hair Removal treatments do not involve the use of chemicals and provide patients with a safe and effective way to eliminate unwanted hair. Once you experience Lumenis® IPL Hair Removal treatments, you’ll never have to mess with these creams again.

Plucking

Plucking is an effective hair removal solution for smaller areas like the eyebrows or when you need to pluck a minimal amount of hair to create a better aesthetic. However, if you’re trying to pluck a larger area, the process can be quite tedious. Plucking is not a solution to remove large areas of hair long-term.

If you want to remove unwanted hair from larger areas of the body, or even those harder-to-reach areas, Lumenis® IPL Hair Removal treatments can help permanently rid you of that unwanted hair. You can keep your tweezers in the drawer for those minimal tasks but rely on laser treatments for the more significant ones.

Am I a Candidate?

If you are tired of shaving, plucking, or waxing and want to live hair-free, you are most likely a good candidate for this treatment. An initial consultation with one of our technicians is the best way to determine if this treatment is a safe and effective option for you. Some patients may not qualify for this treatment, including those with:

  • Active infections
  • Inflammatory skin conditions
  • Viral, fungal, or bacterial diseases
  • Skin cancer
